Study of Dihydroergocristine (Unergol^(¢ç)) in Prevention of Lactation

Abstract
In spite of reassurance of breast feeding, a number of women do not nurse or unable to do so due to various maternal or neonatal condition. Since 15 years ago, the reference drug in the prevention of puerperal lactation has been bromocriptine. As this drug binds the dopamine receptors in pituitary mammotrope and decrease the serum prolactin fevel, it is effective in lactation suppression. Side effects from the medication are infrequent but include headache, nausea, dizziness and potentially significant side effect as syncopal episode. Recent reports suggested that dihydroergocristine is effective in breast suppression without side effect and these results showed favorable in comparison with bromocriptine.¢¥
To compare the effectiveness and side effect of dihydroergocristine to that of bromocriptine, from Dec. 1991 to July 1992, 28 cases of puerperal women received dihydroergocristine for lactation suppression and 33 cases received bromocriptine. Both drug has similar effect on decreasing in prolactin level and lactation suppression. But breast tenderness on treatment 3rd day was more frequent in bromocriptine treated group than dihydroergocristine (21.2 % Vs 7.1 %). But this finding was not statistically significant. Though there was not statistic significance, the incidence of side effect such as dizziness, abdominal pain and constipation were higher in bromocripine treated group.
